Autumn Gold Ginkgo is a stately, deciduous shade tree prized for its symmetrical form, fan-shaped foliage, and brilliant fall color. This male cultivar of the ancient ginkgo species is non-fruiting—making it a low-maintenance choice for residential and urban landscapes. In spring and summer, the uniquely shaped green leaves create a soft, fluttering canopy. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into a stunning golden yellow that drops nearly all at once for easy cleanup. With strong resistance to pests, pollution, and disease, Autumn Gold is an exceptional, long-lived tree for streetscapes, parks, and large yards.
Growth Rate and Mature Size
Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate, adding 12–18 inches per year once established. Slow to leaf out in spring but reliable and vigorous in long-term performance.
Mature Size: Grows 40–50 feet tall and 25–35 feet wide. Forms a balanced, pyramidal to broadly spreading shape—ideal for use as a feature tree or tall shade anchor in larger landscapes.
Watering and Sunlight
Watering: Requires regular watering during the establishment phase. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant and adaptable to various soil types, including urban and compacted soils. Deep watering during prolonged dry periods helps support optimal growth.
Sunlight: Thrives in full sun—6–8 hours daily is ideal. The best fall color and form develop in open, sunny exposures. Ginkgo trees tolerate heat, cold, air pollution, and even salt, making them incredibly versatile in a range of climates.
