The Brown Turkey Fig Tree is a prolific and adaptable fruit tree prized for its sweet, rich-flavored figs and attractive, lobed foliage. This self-pollinating variety produces medium to large fruit with copper-brown skin and rosy amber flesh, ideal for fresh eating, drying, or making preserves. With its compact size, decorative appeal, and dual harvests in warm climates, the Brown Turkey Fig is perfect for edible landscapes, container growing, or backyard orchards. It’s heat-tolerant, low-maintenance, and a reliable choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and bounty.
Growth Rate and Mature Size
Growth Rate: Grows at a moderate to fast rate, typically fruiting within 1–2 years of planting. In warm climates, it may produce two crops per year—an early summer breba crop and a main late summer harvest.
Mature Size: Reaches 15–25 feet tall and 12–20 feet wide in the ground. Easily pruned to maintain a smaller shape or kept compact in containers. Works well in urban gardens and tight planting spaces.
Watering and Sunlight
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season—once or twice a week—especially in hot weather. Figs prefer moist but not soggy soil. Reduce watering in fall and winter as the tree goes dormant.
Sunlight: Requires full sun—6–8 hours daily—for best fruit production and sweetness. Performs well in warm, dry climates and tolerates coastal conditions and poor soil, provided drainage is good.
